Raksha
Bandhan is a Hindu festival celebrated in India, Nepal and among Hindu
communities around the world. It symbolizes the deep bonding, love and
affection between a brother and a sister. It is celebrated in “Shravana” or in
the August month of Gregorian calendar. Raksha Bandhan is a testimony of deep
love and respect between a brother and a sister. Through tying the knot the
sister prays for the health, long life and prosperity of her brother while the
brother takes the responsibility of his sister’s lifelong protection and
wellbeing.
Many
Hindu mythological stories are there to talk about the origin of this wonderful
festival. For example the story of Lord Krishna and Draupadi from Mahabharat;
King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi ; Yama and Yamuna ; Rani Karnavati and Emperor
Humayun.
On
this auspicious occasion I pray for the well being of all brothers and pray for
the growth, prosperity and well being of all sisters. In India this festival also symbolizes communal harmony and peace.
“A
society becomes great when that society knows how to respect women”
